Children—God’s Children

How does God see his little children? How should God’s children be viewed and considered? How should we revere God’s children and care for and protect them?

Children are not only beloved of God, they are the example for each of us to emulate.

We are to be as dependent and as humble as little children. We are to reflect the trust and innocence of little children. Jesus said we are to become like little children.

In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus, called to him a child, and put him in the midst of the people and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:2-4, ESV).

Children are great in the sight of God. Children are perfectly humble and receptive to God and represent God’s kingdom well.

We are to honor and protect God’s children and emulate their harmonious and pure relationship with God. When we welcome, love, protect, and receive little children, we receive Jesus who created and loves these little ones.

God loves and protects his little children and warns anyone who would do them harm.

Jesus said, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” (Matthew 18:5-6, ESV).

When we receive little children, we receive God. When we do not receive little children and bring about their demise, we receive the judgement of God.

Jesus said, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10, ESV).

Children have the love and attention of God and all of heaven. We should beware of how we treat God’s little children, for the kingdom of heaven belong to God’s little children.

May we love and receive God’s little children and receive God and his kingdom humbly, dependently, and receptively like a child.

A Prayer For The Care Of Children: “Almighty God, heavenly Father, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children: Give us calm strength and patient wisdom so to train them, that they may love all that is true, and pure, and lovely, and of good report, following the example of their Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.” (#66., Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
