Discipleship is Seeing and Leading

Can you see where you are, where you are going, and where you need to be? Are you able to see clearly enough to lead someone else along the way?

Discipleship is seeing the way, going the way, and showing the way.

In Luke’s gospel account, Jesus told his disciples a parable, saying, “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.” (Luke 6:39-40, ESV).

When we see the way clearly, we can live the way, and if we can live the way of Jesus, we can show others how to live the way of Jesus.

Discipleship begins with and depends upon God, and then we have our responsibility to see the way and to go the way of Jesus.

Jesus went on to say, “Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.” (Luke 6:41-42, ESV).

May we see the way of Jesus clearly, may we go the way of Jesus, and may we show the way of Jesus in how we live our lives.

A prayer for Those Who Serve Others: “O Lord our heavenly Father, whose blessed Son came not to be served, but to serve: We ask you to bless all who, following in his steps, give themselves to the service of others especially those who are laboring in this time of plague; endue them with wisdom, patience, and courage, that they may strengthen the weak and raise up those who fall, and, being inspired by your love, may worthily minister to the suffering, the friendless, and the needy; for the sake of him who laid down his life for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.” (#45, Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
