Fasting Value
Does your offering to God cost you? When you fast, do you experience the loss and the gain of Jesus?
When we make an offering to God, it should be something of value. When we fast, we should experience the loss and gain intimacy with God as we let go of the things of this world and of the flesh and take hold of what God has for us.
King David wanted to make an offering to God after he had sinned and a man named Araunah offered to freely give David the sacrifice. David said to Araunah, “No, but I will buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.’” (2 Samuel 24:24).
David wanted to offer God something of value. David wanted to pay the price to express worship to God.
May we offer to God offerings of value, and when we fast, may we express ourselves in fasting where we experience the loss of the things of this world and gain intimacy with Jesus as a result of drawing near to him.
A Prayer from the Ash Wednesday Liturgy: “Show favor to your people, O Lord, who turn to you in weeping, fasting, and prayer. For you are a merciful God, full of compassion, long-suffering, and abounding in steadfast love. You spare when we deserve punishment, and in your wrath you remember mercy. Spare your people, good Lord, spare us; in the multitude of your mercies, look upon us and forgive us; through the merits and mediation of your blessed Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
