Getting Honest With God
Do your prayers reflected self awareness and honesty with God? When was the last time you did a self assessment with God?
We should not shield ourselves from the true condition of our hearts. It is denial.
God desires for us to be honest with him when we come to him in prayer. We cannot receive a merciful treatment from God without an accurate and complete diagnosis of our condition.
The Prophet Jeremiah understood this truth when he prayed this prayer in the face of judgement and exile: “Although our iniquities testify against us, act, O LORD, for your name's sake; our apostasies indeed are many, and we have sinned against you.” (Jeremiah 14:7, ESV).
When we come to God honestly, then we can receive God’s true and comprehensive work of grace in our lives.
We can pray with Jeremiah, “Do not spurn us, for your name's sake; do not dishonor your glorious throne; remember and do not break your covenant with us. Can any idols of the nations bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Is it not you, O LORD our God? We set our hope on you, for it is you who do all this.” (Jeremiah 14:21-22, ESV).
And then we can await God’s redemption and restoration.
May our prayers reflect an honest assessment of our heart condition as we come to God truthfully and await his merciful and grace-filled response.
A Collect for the Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity (Proper 25): “Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
