God and His Benefits, and Our Worship

What causes you to worship God and to be in awe of him?

When we consider our great God and his great benefits, we are compelled to worship. God is worthy of our worship, not only for who God is, but for all that God has done to create us and to bless us.

The Psalmist writes, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 130:1-5, ESV).

When we encounter our Holy God, all that is within us wants to express our gratitude to him and to ascribe to him the honor that is due his name.

When we consider the abundant blessings and provision of our God, it leaves a lasting impression on us, which we should not forget. God forgives our sin, heals our sicknesses, he rescues us from the grave, crowns us with his consistent love and mercy, and satisfies us with all manner of good gifts and renewal.

God’s character and benefits compel us to thanksgiving and worship—for who God is and for all God has done for us.

May we acknowledge God and all God has done for us and seek God in gratitude as we worship in awe of him.

A Prayer For Grace To Seek God In Every Way, Benedict of Nursia: “Gracious and holy Father, please give me intellect to understand you, reason to discern you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, a spirit to know you, a heart to meditate upon you, ears to hear you, eyes to see you, a tongue to proclaim you, a way of life pleasing to you, patience to wait for you, and perseverance to look for you. Grant me a perfect end, your holy presence, a blessed resurrection, and life everlasting. Amen.” (#90., Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
