God’s Peace for the World

What does God’s peace look like? Where do we need God’s peace? To what extent does the world need God’s peace?

God offers perfect peace for each of us and he offers perfect peace for the world. Our God is a God of peace.

As the Apostle Paul said to the church in Corinth, “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.” (1 Corinthians 14:33, NIV).

This fallen world is filled with discord and disorder, which is not in congruence with the attributes of our God of peace.

This is why Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, saying, “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:9, NIV).

When we adhere to God’s word and practice the teachings of God’s word, our God of peace is with us—bringing us his perfect peace.

In John’s gospel, Jesus himself said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27,NIV).

The peace that God desires for each of us transcends any hint of peace the world has to offer us. We do not need to be troubled or afraid of this broken world. We have the promise of the presence and peace of God.

This is why Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NIV).

We can have peace in Jesus, even in the face of a troubled world. We can have courage in this world, because Jesus has overcome this world. Jesus has conquered the evil in this troubled world and he offers us his peace.

May we experience God’s peace in this world— instead of fear and troubles—being confident that our God is a God of peace who has overcome this troubled and broken world.

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.” (2 Thessalonians 3:16, NIV).

A Prayer For The Peace Of The World: “Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen.” (#27, Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
