God’s Revelation to Everyone

What does it mean that God reveals himself to the Gentiles? What is Epiphany?

Epiphany is God revealing himself to the Gentiles, so that everyone may come to know and worship him. Epiphany is God making himself known.

Matthew’s Gospel account tells us “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’” (Matthew 2:1-2, ESV).

God went out of his way to reveal himself to wise men from the east, most likely Gentiles, and he gave them a star to lead them to himself. These wise men followed God’s leading through this star and obediently and reverently came to worship God through giving elaborate gifts.

God reveals himself to all people. And wise people still seek him to worship him today.

May we be like these wise men and pursue God in response to God pursuing us through his divine revealing.

A Collect for the Epiphany: The Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles: “O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
