Honestly Drawing Near to God

How do we draw near to God? Do we draw near to God with a correct assessment of who we are and who God is? Are we honest with God when we come before him?

Drawing near to God requires self-awareness and integrity. When we draw near to God we must do so with honesty about who we are and what we need from him. However, most of us have blind spots and we are not fully aware of our sin, our true condition, or our need.

God spoke to the Prophet Isaiah, saying, “Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.” (Isaiah 58:1-2, ESV).

God was asking Isaiah to make known to his people their true condition so that they could honestly come to him and truly repent of their sin and be forgiven and reconciled.

There is more to drawing near to God than simply seeking him daily and delighting to know him more. We must also take an honest and righteous assessment of our sin, our condition, and our need, so that we can truly repent of our sin and come to him for forgiveness and restoration.

Jesus said it this way, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 3:2, ESV).

May we honestly draw near to God so that we may receive the true forgiveness and grace that we need from him.

A Collect for Grace: “O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day: Defend us by your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin nor run into any danger; and that, guided by your Spirit, we may do what is righteous in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
