Honoring Mom

What is the commandment with a promise from God? How can we honor our fathers and mothers? What does it look like “that it may go well with us and that we may live long in the land”?

God takes honoring our parents seriously. It is the fifth commandment to honor our father and mother, and it is the only commandment with a promise of blessing.

Th the Apostle Paul wrote the church in Ephesus, saying, “‘Honor your father and mother’ (this is the first commandment with a promise), ‘that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.’” (Ephesians 6:2-3, ESV).

When we honor our parents good things happen. God blesses us through honoring our parents. When we honor our parents God is faithful to cause it to go well for us, and our lives are prolonged in quantity and in quality.

May we honor God by honoring our fathers and mothers, and may all be well in our fruitful and prolonged days.

A Collect for the Fourth Sunday of Easter: Good Shepherd: “O God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd of your people: Grant that, when we hear his voice, we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
