Jesus’ Holy Cross

What does the cross of Jesus mean for us? How does Jesus dying on a cross change our lives? What transformation does the cross bring about in our world and in our lives?

The cross of Jesus guarantees that our sin has been dealt with—we are forgiven.

The cross of Jesus draws all people to God as a divine signpost welcoming us into the presence of God.

In the Gospel of John, the Apostle John records his account of Jesus’ teaching about being high and lifted up on the cross.

“Jesus answered, ‘Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.” (John 12:30-33, ESV).

Jesus’ death upon the cross draws all people to himself. When Jesus died upon the cross, he enabled all people to have a relationship with him, through his sacrifice on our behalf.

Jesus welcomes all people into his presence through the sign of the cross—which is lifted high to welcome everyone into his presence.

May we see the sign of Jesus’ Holy Cross and be welcomed into his presence as we are drawn close to him as he is high and lifted up.

A Collect For Holy Cross Day: “Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the Cross that he might draw the whole world to himself: Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the mystery of our redemption, may have grace to take up our cross and follow him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
