Jesus is the Greater Moses
Have you considered Moses? Have you considered that Jesus is greater than Moses? When was the last time you contemplated Jesus and really considered who Jesus is, what Jesus has done, and what Jesus means to you and for your life?
We are called to consider Jesus who is greater than Moses, who helped free God’s people from slavery in Egypt, who gave God’s people the law, and who helped lead the people of God to the promised land.
The author of Hebrews writes, “Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house.” (Hebrews 3:1-2, ESV).
When we consider Jesus, as the author of Hebrews instructs us, we find that Jesus is “the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him” and he is the greater Moses.
While Moses helped free God’s people from slavery in Egypt, Jesus sets us free from slavery to sin and death through his own sacrifice, by laying down his own life for ours.
While Moses gave God’s people the law, Jesus is God, he is Holy, and Jesus is the fulfillment of the law personified. Jesus keeps the law perfectly, where we cannot. Jesus resisted all temptation. Jesus lived a sinless life, died a sinner’s death, resurrected from the dead, defeating sin and death, and imparted to us his own holiness and good record of law keeping.
While Moses helped lead the people of God to the promised land, Jesus leads us into his heavenly kingdom, the true promised land, and gives us heavenly paradise and a complete restoration life.
May we consider Jesus, who is the greater Moses, and may we experience Jesus’ freedom from slavery, his fulfillment of the law, and God’s true promised land—God’s glorious kingdom.
A Collect for the Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost, (Proper 23): “O God, our refuge and strength, true source of all godliness: Graciously hear the devout prayers of your Church, and grant that those things which we ask faithfully, we may obtain effectually; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
