Peace For Your Storms

Have you ever encountered a turbulent storm in your life that caused you great fear?

There are many storms that we can encounter in our lives, both literal and figurative storms. We can encounter storms and natural disasters in this life. We can also encounter the storms of life like relational turmoil, financial hardships, job loss, career change, deaths of friends and family, sickness, and accidents, among other challenges and hardships.

God desires to calm the storms in our lives and to meet us with his presence and provision in the middle of our difficulties and fears.

We see this picture of Jesus calming the storm in Matthew’s Gospel account: “When Jesus got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, ‘Save us, Lord; we are perishing.’ And he said to them, ‘Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?’ Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, ‘What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?’” (Matthew 8:23-27, ESV).

Jesus is at peace in the middle of our storms. Jesus is with us and desires to save us from the turbulent waters of our lives and to give us his perfect presence, peace and calm.

We can believe and trust that Jesus is in the storm with us and will deliver us from our troubles. Jesus will calm the crashing waves around us and bring us his perfect peace and his great calm over our lives.

Not only does Jesus have the will to rescue us, he has the ability and the power to rescue us from our peril. We only need to trust that the God who calms the storms out at sea, can also calm the storms in you and me.

May we find the peace and the calm we are looking for and need in the storms of our lives in the calming presence and power of Jesus who is with us in the turbulent waters.

A Collect For The First Sunday in Lent: “Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations, and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
