Prayer Is Asking God

When is the last time you asked God about something? Did God respond to your request? Did you listen for God’s response? Are you still listening for God’s response? Did you ask God about what you should be asking to receive?

At the heart of prayer is the opportunity to come before our God who is willing to listen and to hear our requests. At the heart of prayer is listening for a favorable response from our God who hears us.

Prayer is asking God who is listening, and then listening for God’s response.

Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7, ESV).

James, the half brother of Jesus, said it this way, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.” (James 4:3, ESV).

Jesus also said, “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John 14:13, ESV).

Prayer is asking.

We can and should ask God for what is on our hearts. We should ask of God rightly and from pure motives. We should ask of God in the name of Jesus and for the glory of God. We should ask of God because he is listening for our asking, and we should listen for how God will respond to us.

May we seek God and God’s kingdom in the world and in our lives by asking God for what is on our hearts so that God may be glorified.

A Collect For The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost: "Let your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of your humble servants; and, that we may receive what we ask, teach us by your Holy Spirit to ask only those things that are pleasing to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the same Spirit lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen." (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
