Praying Like Jesus
What do you set out to accomplish when you pray? Why should you pray? What does it look like to pray like Jesus?
Prayer is a priority for Jesus. Many times in the scriptures we see Jesus praying to spend time with his father.
The gospel of Luke tells us, “Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.’ And he said to them, ‘When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.’” (John 11:1-2, ESV).
Jesus often went away by himself to pray. Jesus’ praying intrigued his followers and they desired for him to teach them how to pray.
When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he instructed them to seek God as their loving father. Jesus also taught his disciples to pray for God’s kingdom to come.
Like Jesus, when we pray we are to seek God first, and when we make requests of God, it should be for his kingdom to come.
Rebecca McLaughlin said this about why we pray, “The point of prayer isn’t mostly to get things from Jesus, but to get Jesus himself.”
May we pray often, like Jesus, as we pull away to a designated place to be with God as we seek God and his kingdom.
A Prayer for Sabbath Rest: “Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
