Ready for the Return
Do you live in such a way that if Jesus returned right now you would be comfortable with how he finds the condition of your life?
Are you ready for Jesus to return? Is your house in order to welcome King Jesus when he comes again to judge the living and the dead?
The Nicene Creed professes that Jesus “ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.” And “He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.” Jesus is in authority and on his throne and Jesus will assume his authority and bring his kingdom here “on earth as it is in heaven.”
In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus saId, “Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:42-44, ESV).
While we do not know the exact time of Jesus’ coming again, we should always be ready for his return. We should be awake and alert and watchful at all times. We must be ready, because Jesus will return at an unexpected time.
May we live return ready lives as we await the coming of Jesus to judge the living and the dead and to reclaim his authority over all the earth and everyone in it.
A Collect for the First Sunday in Advent: “Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
