Servants
What is a servant? What are the expectations of a servant? Is a servant expected to do the master’s will? What does a servant receive in exchange for obeying their master?
Servants serve. A servant is not above their master, and a good servant serves their master obediently. A servant serves and receives a fair reward for their service.
We are called to serve God faithfully as his obedient servants.
In Luke’s Gospel account, Jesus asks, “Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?” Jesus concludes by saying, “So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’” (Luke 17:7-10, ESV).
A servant serves faithfully without the expectation of receiving anything in return, because serving faithfully is what a servant does.
God is a faithful master and is worthy of our service. When we serve God, we are doing our duty.
May we be faithful servants of God in all we do.
A Collect for Peace: “O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
