Temptation
Have you ever been tempted to do the wrong thing? Have you ever tempted others to do wrong? Which is worse, being tempted or tempting others?
Being tempted to do wrong is not the same as doing wrong. Enticing others to do what they should not do is wrong.
We should resist temptation and not be too hard on ourselves when we are tempted. We should never tempt others.
In Luke’s gospel account, Jesus said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.” (Luke 17:1-2, ESV).
Jesus warned that temptation is inevitable. A greater warning was given to those who bring about temptation and who cause others to fall into temptation and to do evil.
May we be watchful when we are tempted so that we do not fall into temptation, and may we never tempt others to do wrong, or cause others to do evil.
A Collect for Grace: “O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day: Defend us by your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin nor run into any danger; and that, guided by your Spirit, we may do what is righteous in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
