The Mission of Jesus
Do you have a mission statement for your life? Do you have guiding core values and a purpose statement for your life? What was the mission of Jesus? Did Jesus have core values and a core mission for his life and ministry?
The Gospel of Luke tells us, “Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.” (Luke 4:14-15, ESV).
God gives his power for purpose in our lives. Jesus lived empowered by the Holy Spirit. Jesus lived on purpose and for purpose. Jesus lived on mission.
Because Jesus lived empowered, and on purpose and for purpose, we are to live empowered by the Holy Spirit, on purpose and for purpose. Because Jesus lived on mission, we are to live on mission.
Luke’s gospel account tells us that “Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.’ And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’” (Luke 4:16-20, ESV).
Jesus’ empowered mission was to:
Minister by the power of the Holy Spirit.
To proclaim good news to the poor.
To proclaim liberty to the captives.
To proclaim recovery of sight to the blind.
To set at liberty those who are oppressed.
And to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.
May we receive the empowerment of the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the benefits of Jesus’ fulfillment of his mission on earth. And like Jesus, may we live on mission—empowered by the Holy Spirit of God.
A Collect for the Third Sunday of Epiphany: “Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
