The Power and Wisdom of the Cross

What does true power look like? What does true wisdom look like? How does God display and exercise true power and wisdom?

Most of us have an impression about what true power and wisdom looks like.

According to God’s word, Jesus’ crucifixion is the display of God’s power and wisdom. The world may see the cross of Jesus as weakness and foolishness; however, for God it is the ultimate expression of his power and wisdom for salvation for all people.

In his first letter to the Corinthian Church, the Apostle Paul wrote, “For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:22-24, ESV).

In the first century Israelite context, the majority worldview was either Jewish or Greek, or some kind of syncretic expression. The Jews were looking for signs of power and authority. The Greeks were studying philosophy and looking for wisdom and ideas.

At the cross of Jesus both perfect power and perfect wisdom is accomplished by God for his people.

May we experience the power and wisdom of God through the crucifixion of Jesus for our sin.

A Prayer for Mission: “Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the Cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
