The Power of Prayer for the Powerful

What do the people in power need from the powerful people of a powerful God?

People in power need the fervent prayers of God’s people.

God gives authority to those who govern us and God gives us the privilege and power of prayer and intercession for those in power to do God’s work and God’s will in this world.

The Apostle Paul wrote to his disciple , Timothy, saying, “I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2, ESV).

The Apostle Paul was advocating for prayer for all people, specifically those who are ruling over people, and for those who are in lofty and important positions of power.

Praying brings about providence and peace. Praying enables our lives to be filled with peace, quiet, and dignity in every way.

Paul asserted that this prayer is “good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3-4, ESV).

No matter who governs us, may we always be a people of prayer—praying for all people, especially those who are in authority—recognizing that this is pleasing to God and accomplishes his Kingdom work in the world.

A Prayer For An Election: “Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide and direct, we humbly pray, the minds of all those who are called to elect fit persons to serve in Virginia. Grant that in the exercise of our choice we may promote your glory, and the welfare of this nation. This we ask for the sake of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.” (#31, Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
