The Spirit’s Prayer

How can you pray when you do not have the words to say? When you are too weak to speak how do you cry out to God?

When we are too weak to pray and do not have the words to say to God, the Holy Spirit helps us pray.

The Apostle Paul wrote the believers in Rome, saying, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26, ESV).

God’s Spirit helps us when we are weak. When we do not know how to pray, the Holy Spirit speaks on our behalf. God’s Spirit speaks utterances beyond what our words can adequately express.

May we experience the Spirit of God praying for us when our strength and our words fail us.

The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost, (Proper 19): “O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
