Those Who Have Died

Where do we go when we die? What do we do when we die? What happens when we die?

The questions surrounding death are not prefaced with “if” but “when”. We will all die—it is just a matter of how and when. And when we die, what happens then?

The Author of Hebrews writes, “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27, ESV).

Each of us are facing death and judgement. We will be resurrected to eternal life. There, we join all the saints who have died before us and who have finished their course.

The Author of Hebrews also says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1, ESV).

We are surrounded by those who have died and gone before us—“so great a cloud of witnesses”. And because those who have gone before us are watching and cheering us on, we should live life well, and to the fullest, and “run the race that is set before us”.

May we live well and die well and be resurrected to new life and join the great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us.

A Prayer For The Communion Of Saints: “O God of the spirits of all flesh, we praise and magnify your holy Name for all your servants who have finished their course in your faith and fear; and we ask you that, encouraged by their examples and strengthened by their fellowship, we also may be found to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; through the merits of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (#112, Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
