To Be Loved and to Love

What is our greatest blessing and our greatest responsibility?

Jesus summed up the entire law in these two things, to love God and to love your neighbor as yourself.

Love is our greatest blessing and our greatest responsibility.

Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39, ESV).

Along with the responsibility of loving God, comes the responsibility to love ourselves well. We cannot love our neighbor well if we do not love ourselves, because we are to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

And how are we to love ourselves and how are we to love our neighbor?

We are to love ourselves as God has loved us—we are to love perfectly and sacrificially. This perfect and sacrificial love that God has given us will spill over into our love of our self and into our love of our neighbor.

May we receive God’s love fully and may we love others well as we love God, as we love ourselves, and as we love our neighbor.
