Waiting the Work of God

How much do we do the work in regard to our faith? How does God work on behalf of his people who are patiently waiting on him?

As followers of Jesus, we are called into the work of God; however, we have a God who works on our behalf. Our faith and salvation is based on what God has done and is doing. Our faith and salvation is not contingent upon our work or performance.

Waiting is difficult. Waiting on God to work on our behalf can be even more difficult. We desire control and strive anxiously to produce results by our own efforts and frenzied struggling.

The Prophet Isaiah spoke of God’s faithfulness to those who wait on Him, saying, “From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him.” (Isaiah 64:4, ESV).

In contrast to the pagan idols of old, who required followers to do all the work for their salvation, our God is working for us as we wait on him to come through.

As Isaiah spoke, “But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8, ESV).

May we patiently wait upon God and the finished work of God to be realized and completed in our lives.

A Collect for Strength to Await Christ’s Return: “O God our King, by the resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ on the first day of the week, you conquered sin, put death to flight, and gave us the hope of everlasting life: Redeem all our days by this victory; forgive our sins, banish our fears, make us bold to praise you and to do your will; and steel us to wait for the consummation of your kingdom on the last great Day; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
