Walking In Light And Not Darkness

What does it mean to walk in darkness? How is it different to walk in the light?

When we walk in darkness, we are living in deceit by practicing sinfulness. Walking in darkness is living the lie that wrong is alright. Walking in darkness is avoiding the light.

The Apostle John wrote, “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5-7, ESV).

When we choose to walk in our sin and brokenness, we are choosing to walk in darkness.

God is light. We cannot walk with God and walk in darkness. The light of God dispels the darkness of our sin and brokenness.

If we claim to walk with God and walk in our rebellion against him—walking in our sin and brokenness—we are living a dark deception.

However, as we walk in God’s truth and confess our brokenness and sin, we walk in the light of God—as God is in the light.

Walking in God’s light brings about fellowship and reconciliation with God and others. Relationships are restored in repentance.

May we walk in the light of God’s love in true repentance, and not walk in darkness, as we have fellowship with God and others.

From The Reconciliation Of The Penitent: “O most loving Father, by your mercy you put away the sins of those who truly repent, and remember their sins no more. Restore and renew in your servant whatever has been corrupted by the fraud and malice of the devil, or by their own selfish will and weakness. Preserve and protect them within the fellowship of the Church; hear their prayers and relieve their pain; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019, p. 224).
