Working the Word
Are you doing the work that the word of God requires of you? Are you working out the word of God in your life?
The word of God requires work from the follower of Jesus.
We cannot simply listen to God’s word, know God’s word, memorize God’s word, or recite God’s word, without also obeying God’s word. We must do the work of the word of God in our lives.
In his epistle, or general letter, James, the half-brother of Jesus, writes, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” (James 1:22-25, ESV).
Hearing God’s word and not doing the work of God’s word leads us far away from our true identity as purpose-filled image bearers of God.
Working out the word of God in our lives produces the rich return of God’s blessing in our lives.
May we do the work of the word of God in our lives and experience our true identity as children of God and experience his rich blessings.
A Prayer for Labor Day: “Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
