A Lighter Load

How much weight do you feel is upon your shoulders? Are you overburdened by the heavy weight of the cares of this world?

Going through life carrying our burdens on our own can be overwhelming. We can feel crushed under the weight of responsibilities and obligations that we have. We can feel overloaded by the weight of our own burdens, by the burdens around us, and by the burdens that are placed upon us by others.

In Matthew’s Gospel Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” (Matthew 11:28-30, ESV).

When we are working and are weighed down by the cares and concerns of life, when we are laboring and carrying a heavy load, Jesus invites us to experience a lighter load as he carries our burdens for us.

The yoke, the burden that Jesus gives us, is a lighter load. Jesus does not give us what we cannot carry, but carries our burdens for us.

Jesus gives us rest. We can come to him and learn from him, because he is patient and humble hearted. We can have rest for ourselves in Jesus, because his load is easy and his burden is light.

May we cast off the heavy weight of this life, casting our cares upon Jesus, and receive Jesus’ lighter load as we find sweet rest for our souls in him.

A Collect For Guidance: “Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
