A Righteous King
What does God’s ideal leader look like? What does it mean that God is our king? How should people rule in our present day?
Ultimately, God is our righteous king and ruler. If anyone is to lead or to govern well, they must be governed by God, have the heart of God, and seek to do God’s will.
In the days of the nation of Israel, after the rule of the judges, people had no king and did whatever was right in their own eyes. They failed to see God as their king. God gave the Israelites the judgment of King Saul who was not a good king.
The Book of Acts recalls the history of God calling King David after King Saul: “When he had removed [Saul], he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’" (Acts 13:22, ESV).
In contrast to King Saul, King David was a shepherd who was used to leading sacrificially and regularly, and who loved God, pursued God’s heart, and sought to know and to do God’s will.
May we seek to be ruled by God our Righteous King, and to seek leaders who are pursuing the heart of God and seeking to do God’s will. And may we seek to lead as King David did as people after God’s heart, who will do all God’s will.
A Prayer for the Sovereign: “Almighty and everlasting God, we are taught by your holy Word that the hearts of kings are in your rule, and that you direct them according to your wisdom: We humbly ask you so to govern the heart of all your rulers and governors, that in all their thoughts, words, and deeds, they may ever seek your honour and glory, and act to preserve your people committed to their charge in prosperity, peace, and godliness; Grant this, O merciful Father, for the sake of your dear Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
