Abraham’s Faith

What is faith? How are we saved by faith? What is the promise of faith? Who is the father of faith?

Faith is assurance of the truth and reality of what we do not always perceive to be.

The author of Hebrews defines faith this way, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, ESV).

Faith is so essentially important that the author goes on to say, “Without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6, ESV).

In Hebrews chapter eleven, also known as the hall of faith, or the faith chapter, the author begins with Able, Enoch, and Noah as examples of faith and quickly moves to Abraham, who is sometimes referred to as the father of faith, to illustrate true faith and faithfulness.

Abraham’s life is marked by God’s covenant, or promise, of blessing and is filled with accounts of Abraham’s trust and action towards God, who had promised Abraham the blessing of the promised land, descendants, making him a great nation, and blessing.

May we experience the blessing of God as we have the faith of Abram who “believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6, ESV).

A Prayer of Self-Dedication, by William Temple: “Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; and then use us, we pray, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.” (#73., Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
