God Speaks In Whispers

How is it that we sometimes miss hearing God speak with us in our lives?

Often we are listening for God in the loud and bold events in our lives, and we cannot hear God through the noise.

Other times our lives and the events all around us are so boisterous that we cannot hear the gentle and quiet voice of God.

God speaks gently. God speaks in whispers.

Sometimes we miss hearing God, because the soundtrack of our lives and the background noise of our lives drowns out the voice of God and we do not hear the wise whispers of God to us in his love and gentleness.

The Prophet Elijah did not hear God in the spectacular, nor did he hear God in the resounding of the howling of the wind, nor in the loud tearing of the earth, nor in the roaring rage of the fire. Elijah heard God in a whisper.

God said to Elijah, “‘Go out, and stand (on the mountain before the Lord.’ And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.” (1 Kings 19:11-12, NKJV).

God speaks in whispers. If we are quiet enough, and listen past the chaos, we will hear God.

May we quiet ourselves in solitary places and listen intently for God to whisper to us.

A Prayer For Preparation For Public Worship: “Guide and direct us, O Lord, always and everywhere with your holy light, that we may discern with clear vision your presence among us, and partake with worthy intention of your divine mysteries. We ask this for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.” (#103, Book Of Common Prayer, 2019).
