Watching And Waiting On God’s Word

Where and how do you wait and keep watch for God to speak to you?

The Prophet Habakkuk was a watchman on the city walls of Jerusalem. Being a watchman was a solitary and silent job. The watchman would perch high upon the city walls and would stay awake and vigilant and wait and watch to see and to hear and to report any unusual or suspicious activity.

God spoke to the Prophet Habakkuk and warned him that he was bringing upon Judea the judgment of foreign nations because of Israel’s disobedience and idolatry.

The Prophet Habakkuk wrote, “I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what God will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. And the Lord answered me...” (Habakkuk 2:1-2, ESV).

Habakkuk expected God to speak to him in his solitary, silent and faithful watching.

In his faithfulness, God spoke to his faithful servant and answered his complaint of the coming judgement from the pagan nations.

When we pray to God and when we keep watch in our solitude and silence, God will speak to us and we will hear him answer.

May we watch and wait for God in our solitude and silence and expect to hear from him.

A Prayer For The Acceptance Of Prayer: “O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.” (#99, Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
