Certainty From Saint Luke

What certainty do you have in what you believe? How can you be certain of your faith?

The author of The Gospel of Luke, the physician Saint Luke, wrote his gospel, his letter to Theophilus, to assure us of the facts of the life, ministry, teachings, miracles, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In the Gospel of Luke, the Physician Luke writes, “Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.” (Luke 1:1-4, ESV).

Luke gives us an accurate account of Jesus’ life and ministry and the foundational doctrines of our faith. Luke interviews and gives the accounts of eyewitnesses of the life of Jesus, his teachings and his miracles, as well as the history of the early church.

Luke gives us a factual and orderly narrative of Jesus’ life and ministry. Luke does this so that we may have certainty in all that Jesus has done and taught. Luke provides the confidence we are looking for in our faith.

May we be confident in our faith—confident in the certainty that Saint Luke provides in his orderly account of the eye witnesses of the life and ministry of our savior Jesus.

A Collect For Luke the Evangelist and Companion of Paul: “Almighty God, you called your servant Luke to be an evangelist and physician of the soul: Grant that, by the wholesome medicine of the doctrine he taught, all the diseases of our souls may be healed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
