Expectant, Watchful, and Ready
How are we supposed to live in light of the return of Jesus? What does the return of Jesus require of us?
Because Jesus is returning at a time we do not expect, we are to live expectantly, watchfully, and readily. We are to keep awake because our salvation is coming.
The Apostle Paul wrote the church in Rome, encouraging them with this truth by saying, “Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.” (Romans 13:11-12, ESV).
The return of Jesus means our salvation is nearer to us than when we first believed it and received it, and it is soon to be complete at his coming. The darkness is gone. The light has come. This is why we must put away all sinful works of darkness and clothe ourselves with the light of God.
May we live expectant, watchful, and ready lives as we put off the sinful deeds of darkness and put on the light of God in anticipation of our completed salvation at Jesus’ imminent return.
A Prayer of Trustfulness in Times of Worry and Anxiety: “Most loving Father, you will us to give thanks for all things, to dread nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on the One who cares for us. Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, and grant that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested unto us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (#80., Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
