God of the Living
Is God the God of the living or the dead? What does it mean that God is the God of the living? Are you going to live eternally?
God is a living God. And God is the God of the living. God created life and seeks to sustain life and to give life. Sin and death is the enemy of God. The mission of God is to destroy death, which is the work of the enemy, and to give resurrection life.
Jesus spoke about the resurrection of the dead to the Sadducees, who did not believe in the resurrection, saying, “But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.” (Luke 20:37-38, ESV).
God spoke to Moses and said he is not the God of the dead, but he is the God of the living. He said, “‘I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.” (Exodus 3:6, ESV).
May we stand in awe of the living God who destroys sin, evil, and death, and who gives life as the God of the living—and may we live to him.
A Prayer for the Twenty-first Sunday after Trinity (Proper 27): “O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
