God’s Calling to Go

What is God calling you to do? What is God calling you from? What is God calling you to?

God calls the believer to go and to proclaim his word to his people. We are to share the good news of God, the gospel, with everyone we encounter and in everything that we do.

The Prophet Amos is known as the “just a” prophet, because when God called Amos he was not a descendent of a prophet and was a blue collar worker as a shepherd and a tender of sycamore fig trees. Amos thought that he was “just a” shepherd and a dresser of sycamore figs, but God called him to be a prophet to Israel.

In the Minor Prophet Amos we learn, “Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, ‘I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’” (Amos 7:14-15, ESV).

God called Amos away from his “day job,” from shepherding and dressing sycamore figs, to do his will and to speak his word to Israel.

When God calls us to a new work, he often calls us while we are being faithful in doing our present work. When God calls us from our current work, he often calls us to a new work and purpose of serving him faithfully. God equips the called as they are working faithfully.

Like the Prophet Amos, may we be obedient to God and his call on our lives and obey God as we serve him and proclaim his good news to the world.

A Collect for the The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, (Proper 10): “Let your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of your humble servants; and, that we may receive what we ask, teach us by your Holy Spirit to ask only those things that are pleasing to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the same Spirit lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
