Greatness in Serving

What do you notice about people or organizations that are truly great? How do people or organizations truly make an impact in the lives of others?

There is no better way to be great and to make an impact in the lives of others than service.

People who think outside of themselves and to the betterment and the well-being of others are humble servants who make a measurable impact in the world. There is nothing better than humble service to change lives and to make a difference.

Jesus modeled this humble service and calls his followers to serve in a giving, selfless, and self-sacrificial manner to love others well.

Jesus said, “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:26-28, ESV).

All of Jesus’s life and ministry was marked by humble and sacrificial service. Jesus literally laid down his own life as a ransom for his followers, so that we might live.

May we serve as Jesus served and give our lives as a humble act of worship and service to God and to others as Jesus so beautifully modeled for us.

A Prayer for Those Who Serve Others: “O Lord our heavenly Father, whose blessed Son came not to be served, but to serve: We ask you to bless all who, following in his steps, give themselves to the service of others especially those who are laboring in this time of plague; endue them with wisdom, patience, and courage, that they may strengthen the weak and raise up those who fall, and, being inspired by your love, may worthily minister to the suffering, the friendless, and the needy; for the sake of him who laid down his life for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.” (#45, Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
