How We Love
What is love and how do we love well?
Love is God’s idea. Love is a choice and involves sacrifice.
The Apostle John defines love and its expression this way, when he wrote, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” (1 John 3:16, NIV).
We know love, because God has loved us. Jesus gave his life for us in love and in sacrifice. This love requires a love response from us of sacrifice and laying our lives down for our brothers and sisters as Jesus did for us.
The Apostle Paul said this about love, “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant.” (1 Corinthians 13:4, ESV).
Love expresses itself in sacrifice as we are patient and kind and humble towards others. We love as we give of ourselves in sacrificial service and treatment of our neighbor. We are to love as Jesus loves us.
Considering how God loves us, may we love well as we lay our lives down in sacrificial love and humble consideration of our neighbor.
A Prayer for Those We Love: “Almighty God, we entrust all who are dear to us, especially our family and our neighbors, to your never failing care and love, for this life and the life to come, knowing that you are doing for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (#52., Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
