Love Your Enemies
What do you do with your animosity towards your enemies? Do you look to avenge yourself or to show mercy? Do you love your enemies?
As followers of Jesus we are called to the high calling of loving our enemies.
In the Sermon on the Mount in Luke’s gospel account, Jesus taught, “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” (Luke 6:27-28, ESV).
We are not to return evil for evil. We are to express the love of God to everyone, even to our enemies. We are called to do good to people who hate us and we are to be people of blessing to everyone, even to those who curse or abuse.
May we do the difficult task of loving our enemies as Jesus has commanded us.
A Collect for the Twentieth Sunday after Trinity (Proper 26): “Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, as we live among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
