No Comparison
Are you trusting in God or trusting in yourself to be right with God? What is your standard for right standing with God? Is it God’s holiness or how you measure up to other people around you?
When we assess our lives, it is tempting to compare ourselves with others. And it is often the case that we compare ourselves with people around us instead of comparing ourselves to a holy God.
We seek to be a “good person” and to collect good deeds and behaviors to outweigh our bad deeds and behaviors in order to be right with God and others by our own merits. We trust in ourselves.
In Luke eighteen, Jesus begins the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, saying, “He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt.” (Luke 18:9, ESV).
We cannot be right with God through comparison with other people. Our good deeds can never outweigh our sinful condition. We are no better than others in our sinfulness. “None is righteous, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10, ESV). For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23, ESV).
May we never trust in our own righteousness through comparing ourselves with other sinful people, but trust in God’s righteousness, grace, and mercy in our lives as we trust in him.
A Prayer for the Acceptance of Prayer: “O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.” (#99., Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
