Memorial Day

What is the very least we can do to remember those who have sacrificed, and done the most they could do, and given the greatest sacrifice there is to give?

We remember and we honor those who have served faithfully and given their life so that we can live in freedom.

Their sacrificial and life-giving service reminds us of our Lord Jesus.

In John’s gospel account, Jesus said, “No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily.” (John 10:18, NLT).

Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13, ESV).

We remember and honor those who have faithfully served in giving their life so we can live and enjoy peace and liberty.

We remember Jesus who gave of himself sacrificially so all may live again in perfect freedom, in perfect justice, without war or evil, and so death will be no more.

A Collect for Memorial Day: “Lord God, Almighty Father, creator of mankind and author of peace, as we are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess, we ask you to bless the members of our armed forces. Give them courage, hope and strength. May they ever experience your firm support, gentle love and compassionate healing. Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light. To you be all glory, honor and praise, now and forever. Amen.” (U.S. Conference of Catholic of Bishops, https://www.usccb.org/prayers/prayer-our-troops).
