No Greater Love

What is the greatest sacrifice anyone can give for the service and betterment of another?

No greater sacrifice can be made, or love expressed to another, than to risk and to give one’s own life for the life of another.

Jesus expressed this sacrificial love in John’s Gospel when he said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:12-13, ESV).

The greatest love is a sacrificial and giving love—laying down one’s life for another.

Jesus calls us to participate in this sacrificial love and to love one another as he has loved us. And how has Jesus loved us? “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, ESV).

When another person gives their life in love and sacrificial service for another, the good news of the saving sacrifice of God himself—laying down his own life in love as a perfect sacrifice for the world—is proclaimed.

May we always memorialize the sacrificial love of selfless sacrifice, and the ultimate love and sacrifice of lives laid down for another—as Jesus has given his own life so that we may live through him. There is no greater love.

A Collect For Memorial Day: “O King and Judge of the nations: We remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our armed forces, who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy; grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
