Our Coming King

Who is ruling over your life? Who are you looking to for hope and for salvation?

The question is, will God triumphantly enter into the gates of your life?

We are all ruled and governed by something or someone.

The Kingdom God is often referred to as the rule and reign of God.

We long for and need God to rule over our fragmented lives and over this broken world.

In the time of Israel’s destruction and exile, in 586BC, in the time of the Babylonians, God’s chosen people were longing for the messiah to come and to rule over their lives, and over the world, which was occupied by pagan nations who conquered them and took them captive.

God spoke to his people through the Prophet Zechariah, promising salvation was on the way through a King on a donkey.

"Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9, ESV).

The Israelite people could rejoice because God was coming to save them. God the King was coming in humility to save his people and to usher in his divine kingdom.

May we also anticipate with great joy the rule and the reign of God as we await our humble king and the kingdom and salvation he will bring in our lives and in this world.

A Collect for Palm Sunday: “Almighty and everlasting God, in your tender love for us you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon himself our nature, and to suffer death upon the Cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and come to share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
