Our Eternal High Priest
How can we be confident in life after death? How do we trust that our loved ones who have died are with Jesus and are living eternally? How do we have confidence in our own eternal life after death?
We can be confident of eternal life, because we have an eternal high priest-Jesus. Because Jesus lives and intercedes on our behalf, we too can have eternal life in him. We can be confident of the eternal life of our loved ones, and our own eternity, because God is eternal.
The author of Hebrews writes, “The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he [Jesus] holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.” (Hebrews 7:23-26, ESV).
Jesus is our greater and eternal high priest who lives forever and gives us life through his intercession on our behalf.
We can be confident in our life after death, because Jesus’ priesthood and intercession on our behalf has no expiration date. Because Jesus continues forever, we continue forever. Jesus is able to save unto eternal life, and does save, all those who draw near to God through him.
May we trust and be confident in our eternal security through Jesus-our eternal high priest.
A Collect for the Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost, (Proper 26): “Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, as we live among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
A Collect for All Saints' Sunday: “Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical Body of your Son: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
