Perfect Priest - Perfect Sacrifice

What is the significance of the sacrifice of Jesus as our great high priest?

While priests had to offer sacrifices repeatedly for their sin, and for the sins of the people, Jesus’ sacrifice is perfect because he is sinless and offers himself once and for all as the perfect sinless sacrifice for all the world and for all of time.

The author of Hebrews wrote, “For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.” (Hebrews 9:24-26, ESV).

Jesus intercedes for us in the holy halls of heaven to plead on our behalf to God the father. Because Jesus is the sinless and perfect high priest, who offered himself as the lamb of God, perfect-without blemish, who takes away the sin of the world, there is now no need of any further sacrifice or mediation. Jesus’ sacrifice is effective and is once and for all.

May we trust in our perfect high priest who offers himself as our complete, sufficient, and final sacrifice for our sin.

A Collect for The Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost, (Proper 27): “O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
