Reckoning With God’s Word
What do you consider in your life as having value and importance—concerning where you invest your time, attention, and thinking?
We should always calculate what deserves our limited time, attention, and resources.
We should count the cost of investing our time, attention, and thinking concerning anything that is not of value, or that is not of eternal consequence, for our lives.
Alternatively, we should take into account all that is worthy of our time, attention, and resources. We should invest time contemplating anything that is of value and is of eternal consequence, like God and his word.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, saying, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8, ESV).
If there is anything of God, his kingdom, and his word—those things that are worthy of praise—we should think about these things.
God and his word is worthy of our undivided attention and contemplation. The things of God are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, and excellent, and they are worthy of our meditation and reckoning.
May we earnestly reckon with God, his word, and his kingdom, and find our lives filled with all that is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, and excellent.

A Prayer Before The Reading Of Scripture: “Blessed Lord, who caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and the comfort of your Holy Word we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (#101, Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
