Spirit and Life
How do we have life when we are dead in our sin? How are our bodies made alive in the face of sin and death?
When we have Jesus living in us, we have the life of Jesus living in us. When we have Jesus, we have the Spirit of God. The Spirit is life and gives us life.
The Apostle Paul wrote the believers in Jesus living in Rome, saying, “But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” (Romans 8:10, ESV).
As followers of Jesus, we have invited Jesus into our lives to give us his life. When Jesus takes up residence in us, he gives life to our sin-dead bodies.
Paul goes on to encourage the Roman believers, saying, “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” (Romans 8:11, ESV).
May we experience the joy of the life of Jesus through the Spirit of God living in us and giving us his resurrection life.
A Collect for the The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 10): “Let your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of your humble servants; and, that we may receive what we ask, teach us by your Holy Spirit to ask only those things that are pleasing to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the same Spirit lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
