Thanksgiving

When is a good time to be thankful? Is there a bad time to be thankful, or to express thanksgiving?

Being thankful is extremely important. As followers of Jesus, we have so much to be thankful for and we are called to express our thanksgiving to God. Giving thanks is an act of worship and expresses our gratitude to God.

The chronicler proclaimed, “Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever!” (1 Chronicles 16:34, ESV).

God is worthy of our gratitude and we should always give thanks to the Lord—for he is good and there is no end to his love.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:4-6, ESV).

Paul was encouraging the church in Philippi to be joyful, to rejoice in the Lord, and to be thankful. Joy and thanksgiving go hand in hand. When we rejoice and give thanks, it helps us not to be anxious and to be at peace.

Paul goes on to say, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7, ESV).

May we live peaceful lives of thanksgiving as we rejoice always and give thanks to God.

A Prayer For Thanksgiving Day: “Most merciful Father, we humbly thank you for all your gifts so freely bestowed upon us: for life and health and safety, for strength to work and leisure to rest, for all that is beautiful in creation and in human life; but above all we thank you for our spiritual mercies in Christ Jesus our Lord; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
