The Comforter
What kind of comfort do you need?
We have all experienced hardships and the need for comfort in this sometimes cruel and painful and broken world.
We long for comfort and we long for God’s presence and nurture.
In John’s Gospel, Jesus said, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” (John 14:18, KJV).
Jesus goes on to say, “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26, KJV).
Later in John’s Gospel, Jesus promised: “I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7, ESV).
Jesus gives us comfort through the power and presence of his Holy Spirit. We are not alone. Jesus is with us and Jesus leaves us with his Comforter—the Helper—the Holy Spirit of God.
The Holy Spirit reminds us of all that Jesus taught us—through what he did, and through what he said. We are at an advantage that Jesus has left us with his Helper—the Comforter, because we can receive the comfort we long for and desperately need.
May we be comforted by the Spirit of God at work in us, helping us, teaching us all things, and reminding us of all that Jesus has done for us and all that Jesus has taught us.

A Collect For The Sunday After The Ascension:
“O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
