The Desire to Desire God

To what degree do you desire God? What are the different desires you have? Are these desires greater or less than your desire for God? Do you have the desire to desire God?

We have many desires in this life. But no desire is greater than our desire for God, because in God all our other desires find their place.

The Psalmist wrote, “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.” (Psalm 73:25, ESV).

All our desires fall short of God’s perfect fulfillment of all our heart’s longings. All our desires find their perfect contentment in God.

Augustine of Hippo addressed this truth when he wrote, “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” (Augustine of Hippo, Confessions).

All our desires direct us to our ultimate desire for God. We are restless until we rest in God.

This is why the Psalmist wrote, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4, ESV).

Our delight in God produces contentment in our hearts. Our delight in God produces a desire for God in our heats, which is always satisfied in him.

May we desire to desire God more and may we find perfect contentment and delight in him.

A Prayer For Desiring God, by Francis Xavier: “O God, grant that we may desire you, and desiring you seek you, and seeking you find you, and finding you be satisfied in you for ever. Amen.” (#74., Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
