Where do we go for the purification we need?

In our brokenness and in our fallen nature, we are defiled and in need of purification.

When King David sinned against God with Bathsheba, another man’s wife, he wrote, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10).

David needed a new heart—a pure heart.

When we sin against God, we need purification. We need a pure heart and a right spirit within us.

God will give us the purification we so desperately need and are looking for.

John, the beloved disciple, wrote, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).

When we seek God in confession, God is faithful and just and will forgive us of our sin, and will make us pure again from all our unrighteousness.

May we seek God in confession for a pure heart and renewed spirit, and may we find the purification we need in his faithfulness.

The Collect for Purity: “Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
